The Hunger Project: Nature First Project in Ethopia

The Chahabadi-Stiftung fully funds the project: Nature First – Agroforestry for Food Security and Environmental Renewal in Ethiopia

In the Meskan district of Ethiopia, where climate change and chronic hunger threaten the livelihoods of thousands, The Hunger Project has launched the “Nature First” initiative; an innovative, community-led project designed to restore degraded land and strengthen food security through sustainable agroforestry.

The Chahabadi-Stiftung fully funds this one-year initiative led by The Hunger Project, which will directly benefit 720 households, approximately 3,600 people, by rehabilitating 69 hectares of farmland and home gardens. In collaboration with local partners and authorities, the project promotes ecological farming practices that regenerate soil fertility, improve nutrition, and build resilience to climate change.

More than 21,000 trees and shrubs (incl. including multipurpose species such as jujube and moringa, as well as fruit trees like avocado, banana, and coffee) will be planted to revitalize the land and diversify family incomes. Local task forces will be established to ensure long-term community ownership and sustainability.
